Before you apply for a job at a hotel, check the track record first. Not every hotel that lists a big name in a job listing is a good place to work โ some don't even have a valid address on Google Maps. This article covers concrete steps to verify a hotel in 15-20 minutes, plus 5 calo red flags you must know.
A Business Identification Number (NIB) can be checked at OSS BKPM. Type the hotel name or tax ID. Hotels with active NIB = legal business. Those without or with suspended NIB = avoid.
The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali has a member directory. PHRI member hotels usually comply with industry standards and code of ethics. Cross-check with the official database if available.
Bali calo (job brokers) for daily work are still rampant. They operate on Facebook marketplace, WhatsApp groups, and sometimes even on "official" job platforms. Know these five red flags:
Asking for 'admin fee' or 'training fee' โ legitimate hotels never ask applicants for money. Anyone asking for money = calo. Report and block.
Interview at a place that isn't the hotel โ if the interview is redirected to a "hotel representative office", cafรฉ, or house address, that's a red flag. Hotel interviews happen at the hotel.
Unrealistic salary โ "housekeeping IDR 500,000/day" or "steward IDR 400,000/day" in Bali for entry-level = lie. Check Housekeeping Salary Kuta for realistic ranges.
No clear hotel name โ listings like "5-star hotel in Kuta" without a name = calo. Real hotels give the name + building photo.
Refuses to give direct HR contact โ if the agent won't give the hotel's direct HR number, or says "we'll schedule it later", red flag.
See the Trust pillar for the complete checklist and how hotels with KYC + audit trail work.
For agent background checks, some job platforms already have rating systems. Daily Worker Hub, for example, displays hotel rating + payment track record so workers can compare. See Jobs per Area for verified listings.
Investing 15 minutes to check a rating before applying saves the risk of 3-6 months working in the wrong place. Suggested workflow:
Check Google Maps (3 minutes)
Check official website + Instagram (3 minutes)
Check NIB at OSS (3 minutes)
Check calo red flags (3 minutes)
Discuss with worker community (3 minutes)
Fifteen minutes, and you can apply with peace of mind. Don't let the first shift be the moment you realize the hotel doesn't pay overtime, or doesn't have BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, or has a toxic supervisor.
